Biography

Surely, one of the best actors of his generation, Frank Wolff was never awarded or honoured for his work. He was one of the american actors, that were forced to travel to Europe for a successful career. His performance in "Salvatore Giuliano" 1962 is definitely one of the greatest performances ever. Breath-taking. Memorable stuff. Moreover, he is well known for his roles in many "Spaghetti-Westerns" and stealing the lead character`s show. He often played bad guys. However, one of his most famous, but briefest, performances was as Brett McBain, the friendly farmer in Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West". He also brought much needed light relief as the sheriff in Corbucci's "The Great Silence". In fact, his show as a crazy killer in "Time of Vultures" is pretty cool. Furthermore, he gave commentary to the 60s documentary "Western Italian Style" in 1968, a exciting behind-the-scenes look at the genre. When the time of "Spaghett-Westerns" was ending, he had a few roles in Italian crime movies. Another memorable performance was in Duccio Tessari's Giallo "Death Took Place Last Night". Sadly, the vastly underrated Frank Wolff killed himself in the Hilton Hotel in Rome in 1971.

Trivia

  • Directed two original one acts for the advanced direction class at the UCLA: "The woman in Strindberg's room" and "The lucky guy".
  • He became quite good friend with director Hellman, Monte, when they studied and worked together at the UCLA in the 1950s. Due to it one of the first movies starring Frank Wolff was Beast from Haunted Cave (1959), directed by Hellman, Monte.
  • His father was a Bay Area doctor.
  • His parents helped set up the bookings for an anti-war play at the UCLA titled "The time is tomorrow" in the early 1950s. Frank Wolff appeared in the tour version of this UCLA production.
  • His parents were politically active and more or less left oriented. They supported corresponding theatre projects at the UCLA, when Frank Wolff studied there in the 1950s.
  • Went to Italy in the early 1960s for making movies there, after an advise of director Corman, Roger. Frank Wolff had starred in two Corman movies (Ski Troop Attack (1960) and Atlas (1961)) and had also appeared in a fistful of other Corman works shortly before traveling to Italy.
  • Won two times the UCLA best actor award: for "Macbeth" (1951), playing the title role, and "The lower depths" (1952), playing Satin.
  • His last agent was Michele Pietravalle in Rome.
  • Actor Robert Hoffmann, who starred in Alberto De Martino's Femmine insaziabili (1969), co-starring Frank Wolff, settled in his Hilton Hotel appartement in Rome after his suicide, because they had the same agent (Michele Pietravalle) at this time. Hoffmann, searching immediately for a roof over the head, didn't care much about the fact his predecessor had been found dead in the bath tub.
  • Was offered the role of the villain in Sergio Leone's legendary "For a fistful of dollars", but dropped it more or less for artistic reasons.
  • Starred and co-starred in movies by most of the most important Italian western directors of all time: Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, Enzo G. Castellari, Giuseppe Colizzi, Giuliano Carnimeo (aka Anthony Ascott) and Sergio Sollima. Only with Sollima he did no western, but the agent-action-adventure "Agente 3S3, massacro al sole".
